A Cautionary Tale

This post is a bit of a departure from what I typically post. The woman in this video, Shyann Hamilton, was offered money by some random dude if she shaved her head. She needed the money, so she took the offer. I guess the dude offered a very small deposit, she shaved her head on video, and then he simply ghosted her without compensating her as promised. This was devastating for her since it seems pretty clear from the video that shaving her head was not something she would ordinarily even consider, and so doing something out of character and then having practically nothing to show for it was something that was emotionally devastating for her. The first part of the video is her making what seems like an empowering statement (something you have seen hundreds of times on this blog), but then she cuts to her story about how the scam happened and the financial need that made her vulnerable to a scammer. She takes responsibility for her part, which is commendable. If she is considerably more cautious in the future, that strikes me as the best possible outcome under the circumstances. The last portions of the video focus on her making the best of the situation, and that is also good that she is able to do that. She is clear that she wants to grow her hair back out and that having a shaved head is not for her. If I had seen only those first three minutes of footage and nothing else, I would have thought it was a cool and empowering moment. Instead, it was anything but.

Normally, I don't share content like this, but this is not the first time that a woman has been scammed in this way. There was the story of the woman (a model) in Utah a few years ago who shaved her head and eyebrows expecting a good payday and ended up without her hair and eyebrows, and with none of the pay she was promised. Her very blunt comments about her experience are a cautionary tale. The predator in that case claimed to represent a company that does regular hair related ad campaigns, and used contemporary technology to look legit, until it became obvious he wasn't. Long story short, he ghosted her. There are other sorts of predators who look for women who want or need money to cover living expenses. I have many words to describe the individuals who prey on women like Shyann. None of them are worth saying here.

My advice is very simple. Don't shave your head for money, especially if you would never want to shave your head in a million years. This applies in particular to any woman who has long hair. The change to your appearance will be dramatic, to say the least, and you will have to live with the consequences for a very long time. Hair does grow back, but it could be years before your hair is back to where you want it. The promise of money is just not worth the hit to your sense of self-worth. If you were already thinking of shaving your head for whatever reason (whether for charity, or simply because you find the prospect of a shaved head or buzz cut appealing), that's great. Just don't fall for what any scammer would offer. Just do it for yourself. No matter the outcome, you will at least feel good about trying it out, and if having a shaved head turns out to be a good fit for your lifestyle and personality, that's even better. I think there are plenty of people in your own personal lives and online who will support your choice.

This blog is here to promote the bald or shaved head as an aesthetic, a fashion choice, a personal statement, or a long-term life choice. The articles and videos I post are of women who shave their heads to check an item of their personal bucket lists, or because they simply enjoy having a shaved head or buzz cut, or who have chosen to openly embrace their baldness due to hairloss (e.g., alopecia). I only wish to post positive and empowering videos and articles that offer a challenge to conventional beauty standards. And if this blog inspires you to shave your head for your own personal journey, then you have come to the right place. I'll steer clear of posting anything that seems sus to me. And I am grateful to those who have posted their content online, as they have a chance to inspire others to try out a look that they too might enjoy, if that is what they want.

Remember that the point is to do what you want. If you decide bald is beautiful for you, that is great and this is a blog you can come back to for further inspiration and support. If you decide that's not for you, please keep your hair, but also please respect the women you might encounter who do shave their heads. We all are allowed our personal choices. And we also should never be pressured, coerced, or scammed into doing something we don't want to do. Thanks for hearing me out. I'll be back with more typical content soon.
