Buy Me a Coffee

via GIPHY

I am still on hiatus. One way to motivate me to post new content, or to simply show appreciation for what I have put into this blog so far, is to support me a bit. You can, for example buy me a coffee. Doing so means that I can freely spend time looking through YouTube and TikTok to find content appropriate for this blog. Thanks.

These 4 women have had alopecia since childhood. Their hair loss doesn't define them.

As society normalizes discussions about this autoimmune disorder, it's clear that the challenges extend beyond physical hair loss. Many carry a psychological burden, feeling as though they don't conform to society's beauty ideals. Insider spoke to four women who, as adults, are redefining their relationship with their hair, showing us that beauty encompasses so much more.

Note that this blog is still on hiatus, but it would be remiss not to highlight Alopecia Awareness Month.

Fifteen Years

Happy Anniversary!

This blog's first post was published on August 5th, 2008. There were no blogs focused on videos of women who shaved their heads or were bald due to conditions like alopecia. So, this blog filled a very unique niche. YouTube was new back then, and there were no influencers at the time.

One of the first posts was a video of a woman with alopecia who talked about normalizing bald heads on women. It's still one of my favorite videos. Over time, this blog would share videos of women shaving their heads, discussing life with alopecia, pros and cons of having a shaved head, shaving and scalp care advice, makeup advice, music videos, ads, GRWM videos, and some of bald women just going through part of their daily life. Sometimes news articles and columns were posted. Even the occasional artistic website got featured here. I tried to make sure there was adequate representation, including videos from different continents, different languages, ethnicities, ages, etc. This blog was intended to be as body neutral as possible.

I took plenty of breaks. Early on, that had to do with lack of content. These days, there is an abundance of content. Since mid-decade last decade, time to do proper maintenance has been a problem. I took an extended break between 2017 and 2019. I have been posting quite a bit since. The 15th anniversary seems like a good time to take another extended break. Traffic has dwindled since 2021, when this blog was averaging about 5,000 unique visitors per month. Even that was a fraction of what traffic was like at its peak around 2015 or 2016. I have wondered if this blog has more or less served its purpose (which would be a good thing). I'll periodically log on and check for dead links. Otherwise, I think it is time to step back and make some decisions in a few months about this blog's future.

Hopefully you find value in what is already in the blog's archives, and hopefully this blog helped to normalize shaved and bald heads on women.

I shaved my head bald and it's been the most liberating decision of my life

I meant to post a link to this article earlier.

Although my decision initially plagued me with undercurrents of fear and anxiety, I felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I could finally be unapologetically me. I was optimistic about the future, eager to explore my femininity through aspects beyond my appearance and re-define my own personal perception of beauty.

Fast forward six months, I have discovered new realms of self-love and now understand that the need to establish ourselves beyond societal expectations is crucial. Beauty is honestly skin-deep and sometimes it takes being vulnerable to obtain the truest version of ourselves. I loved my hair but I knew that I couldn’t depend on it. I now know that when it comes to my appearance, the only opinion that matters is my own.

What Symone Sanders’ New Show Means for Bald Black Women

This was published in 2022, but it's still timely. Read the column here

Some excerpts:

If you’ve ever watched Sanders you see that she is dynamic, exudes confidence, and embraces her baldness—which is something that any bald woman will tell you can sometimes be hard to do. The patriarchy’s views on how women should be wearing their hair are firmly entrenched in American society, and broadening Americans’ horizons on the many ways women can be beautiful, professional, and authoritative is going to take some time.

“I'm a bald, curvy, Black woman from North Omaha, Nebraska, with a bedazzled nail, and I like a bold lip—and that's what I'm going to continue to be,” said Sanders in a recent BET interview.

...

Thankfully, Sanders is rewriting the script (literally) and refusing to allow stereotypes of being a bald Black woman keep her from accomplishing her dreams. “My hope is that me showing up every day as my authentic self, continuing to keep the bar high and substantive, not [as] a caricature of what people think I am, but truly just being myself—is opening up the door for other young people to step into their respective workplaces, wherever they are, and be comfortable with who they are,” said Sanders to BET. Like Sanders, I have always felt empowered, beautiful, and on top of the world as a bald Black woman. But many other bald Black women could still use the confidence boost, to let them know that they are truly enough.

For those of us who are already there, we’ll continue to showcase how being a bald woman is fierce—and something that you have to “own” proudly, regardless of the negative and harmful rhetoric that has been put upon us.

Shaving my head for the first time

Troy (Sinead O'Connor)

It would be a shame if this blog did not pay tribute to Sinead O'Connor, who shaved her head because she was disgusted with traditional beauty standards, and especially the standards that existed in the music industry. She was a pioneer.

Florence Pugh Explains Why She Shaved Her Head

As the subtitle to the article puts it, “Vanity is gone.”

“I purposely chose to look like that,” she told Radio Times in an interview published Tuesday, according to the Daily Mail. “I wanted vanity out of the picture. Hollywood is very glamorous—especially for women—and it’s hard for an audience to see past that.”

By stripping away her hair, she not only has the opportunity to gallivant around Europe with Andrew Garfield while looking cool as hell and rock the wig of her choosing when she feels like it, she also believes it “helps the audience.”

“Vanity is gone,” she said. “The only thing that people can look at then is your raw face. Even at the beginning of my career, I was always fighting to control my image. … It helps me when I’m wearing less makeup because then I’m less of a sparkly thing on screen. I feel like I’m allowed to do ugly faces, like it’s more acceptable.”

I finally shaved my head

I remember finding this video early during the COVID pandemic when many of us were basically isolated. It was so much fun that I had to post it. And then it vanished. Apparently the video is back on an archive channel for Joana.

Chihuahua ścięcie włosów, z 50cm na zero!

From the moment I saw a certain yogi's ritual of hair cutting, it followed me every day. I've been saving up to do this for exactly a year. I didn't cut them for looks - only for soul. For me, this is a symbolic cleansing of the Soul and making room for new, beautiful experiences in my life. Hair took a lot of my attention, time and energy every day. It required a lot of courage from me, a total step out of my comfort zone. I am very happy that I did.

By the time Kylie Bamberger turned 15, she was completely #bald. #alopecia #beauty #hair #shorts

Good news (or maybe not so good news) and thank you (UPDATE)

On a daily basis, this blog is now getting about the same number of daily unique visitors it had at its peak sometime around the middle of last decade. If this level of interest continues, I may have to rethink my planned extended break after August 5th, when this blog celebrates its 15th anniversary. In the meantime, expect new posts about twice a week until then  expect irregular posts.

June 26 update: It was nice while it lasted. Daily unique visitors are back down to where they were earlier this month, and for most of this year so far. I am back to planning a retrospective post for August 5 and then going back to my original plan of taking an extended break. After that, I'll make some decisions about this blog, including simply deleting it.

I've posted a couple of Ashley's previous videos, where she discusses her reasons for wanting to shave her head, and when she shaved her head for the first time. In this video, she answers many of the questions she gets, as well as her own personal thoughts about having a shaved head. She seems very content. Overall, a very positive video.

Goodbye Hair: Long Hair to Buzzcut

Remember Ashley? She posted a video about her plans to shave her head on April 12, which I featured here last month. Tl:DR she is simply tired of having hair and has wanted to have a shaved head for a long time. April 12 came and went, and she did post a short video marking the occasion, and this longer video that just dropped. Her reaction as she shaved her head and after she had finished was so full of positive energy. I hope enjoys shaving her head for as long as she wants. We all deserve to be happy with how we look, and to feel free to express ourselves.

One of the cool things about this video is that she does express being more nervous than excited before she begins shaving, even though this is something she clearly wants to do, and she's been planning this for months. And she accepts her feelings as real (and based on a lot of societal norms that burden us all), and does what she wanted to do anyway, and has a lot of fun in the process. Making major changes in our lives (even over something as minor as shaving our heads) comes with some anxiety. That is normal. Accepting that, and understanding where that anxiety is coming from is important for us to move forward and do the things in life we want to do. The worst that happens? We can say we tried something out of our comfort zone.

I like that she set a date for shaving her head, and told people in her life that she was shaving her head on that specific day. If this is something you really want to do and want to make sure you follow through, put in on your calendar app. Your cell phone will remind you. One other thing seems important: identify your support network. People in your life who care about your well-being will be happy for you when they see you after you shave your head.

I AM NOT YOUR FETISH (BALD TALK)

This is the post that will probably lose me any remaining viewers. Whatever. What Lydia has to say is what many vloggers probably think when they get comments, DMs, and emails that are, to say the least, just gross. Lydia simply cuts to the chase. She doesn't want to kink shame. She just wants those who have a shaved head fetish to respect some very basic boundaries. If you ever wonder why I have to delete so many posts when video links go bad, you'll probably have an idea if you actually bother to listen to what she has to say. If your particular kink is women who have shaved heads, you do you. Just be cool and be quiet. Don't make weird online requests. Don't do something deranged in public. If you're one of my viewers who's pestered some vloggers thinking that they would be thrilled that you wanted them to fulfill your requests, or go on a date? She's right: they're almost 100% likely to not be into you. Get over it. Find different sites to meet your needs. Some vloggers just want to talk about why they shaved their heads before moving on to other things that interest them. Others may want to share videos so that others who identify as women or girls with some tips for how to shave their heads or how to maintain a shaved head (yes, there is some work involved). I only hope that vloggers who find this blog get a good idea about what this blog is about before they delete posts or channels. They probably are helping other girls and women try something out that they were afraid to do because of some ancient and ridiculous social norms. It's well past time to move the conversation forward. If anyone still is willing to follow, visit, or support this blog from now on, thank you. Otherwise, you do you, and good luck.

Maintenance and Some Thoughts

Over the last couple days, I've been hiding or deleting posts where video links have gone bad along with some other basic blog maintenance. That's actually my least favorite part of blogging. In spite of the truism that "once something is on the internet it is there forever", the reality is more complicated. Content can vanish without a trace. As far as videos and other links that go missing? I'll probably never know why they went away. Vloggers decide to delete the channels, or decide individual video posts don't reflect how they want to present themselves, or maybe they received too many gross comments (which really is awful), or some combination of all of those reasons. Anyway, removing dead links is a time-consuming chore, but necessary if I want this blog to make an impact. Once I decide to take my next extended break, I am still going to log in and take care of some maintenance just so it can keep regular viewers returning and attract (I hope) new viewers.

I do experiment more with different video platforms. I used to stick primarily to YouTube (and to a much lesser degree Vimeo and DailyMotion). Lately, I've been posting TikTok videos whenever I've found a content creator who has a video or two that I find fun and empowering. I'm well aware that any of these social media platforms can become unavailable for any of a number of reasons. The parent company could go bankrupt, and its content vanish in the process. This blog has a very small but international audience. It's no surprise that some nations ban certain platforms and permit others. Some of my viewers may not be able to access YouTube unless they are lucky enough to use VPN. In the US, there is the threat that TikTok might be banned. That could create some headaches for me, since I've started posting more content from that platform.

Regardless, I am not sure why, but blogs seem to have some staying power. Individual content may come and go, as may social media platforms, but with some effort, this blog can still provide content that is entertaining, educational, and inspiring. It may be a niche blog, but there is plenty of space for others to similarly offer content challenging outdated social norms about gender. In the meantime, I'll keep doing my part.

Finally, for those of you who keep visiting, or who are new to this blog, thank you for visiting. I hope you find this blog meaningful to you.

Less than four months to go

In less than four months, this blog will mark its 15th anniversary. I've set it up so that after a much needed break, I can either resume posting or pull the plug. I'm not worried about relevant content sharing this particular blog's perspective. I do pay attention to traffic and whether or not I can justify some espressos as I select content to post. If those look positive, this blog will be around for a while. If not, I will shut it down satisfied that I shared some realistic, positive, entertaining, and educational content that hopefully got viewers to rethink gender role expectations, even if just a bit. In the meantime, let's enjoy these next weeks and months that we know will remain, and for those interested, maybe hope for the future.

Changes...

Change is inevitable. By now, you've noticed the recent name change to The Bald Wave. It's a change that was long overdue. So why the change? I'll keep it short and simple:

  1. Women (cis or transgender) with shaved heads or who are open about their baldness are more accepted than ever.
  2. Although shaved heads are less common on women than males, they are more common now. Why? There is a shift in gender norms.
  3. That shift in gender norms is building on earlier societal changes, meaning we appear to be at the start of a bald wave, where women increasingly feel comfortable shaving their heads or being bald in public.
  4. The new title is more inclusive than the old title. The Bald Wave's target audience is still cis-female, trans-female, non-binary, and of course allies.
That's it. I obtained a new domain name to move the contents of this blog, which I hope to do in a few months, depending on traffic (which is how I gauge interest in this blog). Otherwise, expect more of the content that you're used to seeing here.

A Onda Careca (The Bald Wave)

On April 26, 1971, a Brazilian magazine, O Cruzeiro, published an issue containing an article with the title A Onda Careca. That translates roughly from Portugues to English to The Bald Wave. As you can see on the cover, there is a model with long blonde hair surrounded by four other models with shaved heads (actually very short buzz cuts). The article itself runs from pages four through nine, and features a photoshoot of eleven models with their heads shaved. They are featured in various outfits, including, of course bikinis. Some of the photos show the models before and after as a contrast. The entire photoshoot challenges one facet of the conventional wisdom about femininity and beauty: that a woman must have long hair to look feminine and beautiful. The article mentions that in the future (the author suggested the year 2000) women will have shaved their hair off, and that perhaps this will be some norm in the media. Obviously, we're not quite there yet. The article also describes the models' experiences of having shaved heads.

It's an article that may be very much of the early 1970s, but also ahead of its time. Then again, a lot of how societies thought about the future were very forward-thinking. We didn't experience a bald wave by 2000, and we arguably have not experienced a bald wave yet. We have progressed to a point where if a celebrity like Halsey, Willow Smith, Charlize Theron, Joey King, or Doja Cat (among numerous others in recent months and years) are featured on the cover of a magazine or in a news article with a shaved head, it will get attention, but it's hardly controversial. And more women seem comfortable shaving their heads, or in the case of hair loss, being open about their baldness. We have female influencers on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok who are showing off their shaved heads, and describing their experiences. You can find plenty of recent blog posts by women and girls who have found the experience of shaving their heads liberating, and there are articles offering advice for women and girls considering shaving their heads for the first time, or how to maintain their shaved heads. Even the NYT had an article about women shaving their heads last spring. That's progress, and their example sets the conditions for what could be a bald wave in the near future.

15 surprising things that happened after shaving my hair

The first few paragraphs from this inspiring blog post:

About a year ago, I finally took the plunge and shaved my hair. What a life-changing decision that was.

I cannot even begin to describe how much shaving my hair has impacted my life since doing it, but I thought I’d try. And no, I’m not just talking about a “look” thing. It also has to do with learning and practicing self-respect (and self-love) every day.

Back to last year. When I was debating whether or not I had what it takes to rock a bald head, there weren’t that many articles on the internet to guide me in my decision. There were a couple (ok, maybe more than that) of YouTube videos here and there of girls filming the process of shaving their head, and boy, am I grateful for them.

And so, today I thought I would write about my own experience with shaving my hair, especially as a black woman with (former) big, naturally curly hair. I know we struggle a lot with our hair and we grow up with cultural hair bias so ingrained in us, it can be difficult to remain sane while trying to navigate it all.

That’s why I decided to compile a list of 15 surprising things that happened after shaving my head.

If you are wondering if you should get a buzzcut or why you should get one, then this post might be just the inspiration you needed to at least consider shaving your head.

Should I Shave My Head? 5 Reasons You’ll Be Glad You Did

The new year is a time to start fresh, set goals for what’s ahead, and let go of the past. That could be career-, health-, or finance-related, but it’s always fun to dream and find ways to improve. I also like to use this time of year to jot down what I’m most appreciative of: family, loved ones, good health, career success. But would you ever expect a hairstyle to make that list? It may sound ridiculous, but I can honestly say that shaving my head 11 years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Recently, Doja Cat, Blac Chyna, Dixie D’Amelio, and Maisie Williams all shaved their heads and are loving the bold, new look. That’s not to say you should follow a trend because celebrities are doing it. But maybe seeing their oozing confidence on display after shaving their heads has you wondering if this confidence is a side effect, and whether you should just buzz off all of your hair too.

You should! What better way to give yourself the gift of renewal and a fresh beginning than by making an especially cool alteration to your appearance (remember, it’s just hair) that will impact your life in ways you never thought possible.

The Future

This blog has been around for a long time. The first post was published on 5 August 2008, which means we're several months away from this blog's 15th anniversary. Blogging was still a common medium back then, and we were in an era when YouTube was fairly new and "peak YouTube" was just about to happen. Compared to today's videos (not just on YouTube, but Instagram and TikTok as well), those early videos were raw. But what they lacked in production values they typically more than made up for in terms of realness.

I've shared plenty of videos and articles since that first post. I've looked for content that is positive, thought-provoking, and entertaining. If this blog got you rethinking some of our gender norms, that's great. That was and is the goal all along.

Bloggers have lives and get burned out. I've taken a few breaks here and there, including long year and a half break between October 2017 and May 2019. Posts and updates have been very consistent since then. When I logged on in May 2019 for the first time in ages, I decided I'd at least keep this blog going through its 15th anniversary. After that, I'll have to make a few decisions.

A lot will depend on whether I believe that there's enough of an audience for this blog to make it worth the time and effort to maintain it. We may be at a point where many are more jaded by social media, but I am not sure that means that blogs will make a comeback. This blog might get about one tenth of the visitors per month compared to its peak. For a while in late 2021, it looked as if traffic was going to return to what it had once been. Then last year happened. So, for now the plan is to keep this blog updated until its 15th anniversary. I will probably take another long break after that. Then I'll decide if this is worth continuing or if it's better to say "so long" to those who still do visit.

Regardless, I don't worry at all about the influence of females on various social media who shave their heads and challenge some outdated social conventions about gender. There's far more content out there than I could ever keep up with or find time to signal boost. Fashion sites and blogs have been better at portraying females with shaved heads or who are very open about baldness (due to alopecia, etc.) in a positive light and as a more mainstream fashion statement. There has been a lot of progress since 2008, and I think there is good reason to be optimistic. I may simply conclude that a blog like this is no longer necessary and that our society is more accepting of bald females than it used to be. If so, I will probably quietly bid you all adieu. We'll see.
