you should shave your head

She's been shaving her head for several years. She loves the convenience, and that she can do things like bleach a few weeks-worth of hair growth, and shave it all off again. This is yet another vlogger who represents the ethos of this blog. If you're watching this video, or spending time on this blog, and are thinking of shaving your head, just do it.

My Daughter Shaved her Head!!!

This was early on in the pandemic, but since the pandemic is still very much a part of our lives, defintely relevant. Omicron is the latest variant. We'll all probably be facing some more restrictions. Whether it's a bucket list item, a practical style to ride out a pandemic, or just a style that makes sense from a lifestyle perspective, it's all good. It's especially good when you have people in your life who support you. Probably most (at least the ones who matter) will.

Top 7 Perks of Shaving Your Head

This writer finds several advantages to having a shaved head, and has a few tips as well.

Why I Shaved My Head Before an International Beauty Pageant

This article by Cricket Guest discusses why she chose to get a buzzcut just days before she participated in a beauty pageant. She's since experimented with short hairstyles, but really enjoyed her experience with a shaved head. And she's probably right that if you are a woman and clicked the link to her article, you've been thinking of shaving your head. Then again, if you are a woman who clicks on this blog, chances are you have already been thinking of shaving your head, or have already done so.

Everything You Need to Know About Shaving Your Head

I've posted tips on shaving your head before on this blog. Here's a guide from L'OREAL.

9 Women on What It Felt Like to Shave Their Heads

This article from Glamour is very positive and inspiring.

From the intro:

The message is clear. A buzzed head represents a fearless, done-hiding movement, and in both fiction and real life, González isn't alone. A community of women with buzz cuts and shaved heads is growing under hashtags that embrace the look, uniting people in dismissing societal standards and celebrating those who do what they want. Especially considering the beauty ideals that are pushed on women from birth (thanks, shampoo commercials), bald women's blatant refusal to exist for anyone but themselves is groundbreaking.

Are There Any Benefits to Shaving Your Head?

Should I shave my head? Benefits, precautions, and how to do it

How to shave your head safely

You don’t want to rush your first shave, so leave yourself plenty of time.

What you’ll need

  • adequate lighting
  • hand mirror to check the back, the sides, and behind your ears
  • scissors or clippers
  • razor with a new blade
  • shaving cream or gel
  • moisturizer or aftershave lotion
  • soft towel
Instructions

If you have long hair, cut the bulk of it off before shaving. Get as close to the scalp as you can. It may help to use clippers. Then, give your scalp a thorough washing with warm water.

Next, follow these steps:
  1. Apply shaving cream or a warm compress to your scalp for a few minutes to soften the hair.
  2. Use a sharp razor. Dull blades make nicks and cuts more likely.
  3. Start with the top of your head. Use gentle strokes, going in the direction of hair growth.
  4. Rinse the blade after every stroke to get rid of excess shaving cream and hair.
  5. Move to the sides, taking care to fold your ears down to avoid nicks.
  6. Shave the back of your head, working down toward your neck.
  7. Use a handheld mirror to make sure you haven’t missed any spots.
  8. Rinse your scalp with cool water.
  9. Pat dry with a soft towel.
  10. Apply moisturizer or aftershave lotion.

You can also use an electric razor, but the result may not be as smooth. On the other hand, it’s faster and easier because you don’t need to use shaving cream or keep rinsing the blade.

How often you’ll need to shave depends on how smooth you want your head and how quickly your hair grows.

Why I Buzzed My Hair, and Why You Should Too

Her advice is simple

If you’ve ever wanted to buzz your hair, but don’t for any of the above reasons, then let me provide you with six reasons for you to take the plunge and chop it all off:
  •  Cutting all of your hair off is so satisfying. Ever taken scissors to barbie hair as a kid? Imagine that, but ten times more fun. It’s a super cool sound, and you can give yourself a bowl cut for five minutes without ruining your life.
  • It’s super cathartic, and a great way to release emotion in a way that is constructive instead of destructive. In a lot of ways it was symbolic for me, but cutting your hair like this can mean whatever you want it to mean, and it can be a good metaphor for letting go and releasing the things that are weighing you down.
  •  It’s super convenient. I never have a bad hair day, and I never have to worry about how to wear my hair in the mornings.
  • It never gets in my way, never sticks to things, and you can see all of my cool piercings all of the time.
  • You’ll save so much money on hair products. Shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, hair gel, hair mousse, even hairbrushes? Say goodbye. You’ll never need them again.
  •  The buzz cut is iconic. I’ve never seen a woman look bad with a shaved head, and every room you walk into will notice you’re there. It will bring attention to your features, and make every outfit you wear so much cooler.
  • You deserve to be happy, regardless of what other people think. You deserve to be free of societal expectations, and do whatever the hell you want with your hair.

How the World Finally Stopped Shaming Women with Shaved Heads

Here's a clip from the article (2017):
The world no longer needs to have a discussion every time a famous woman shaves all her hair off, and it's a clear signal that we are finally reaching a new point of freedom for women's self-expression. Aside from anything else, in the age of the internet, we are all inherently less shockable.

The article seems focused more on celebrities, but is also applicable for those who have no interest in celebrity status.

Going Low: How Black Women Have Reclaimed Bald Beauty

These days, the idea of existing as a bald, Black woman carries an air of stately rebellion. Like me, many Black women have taken the plunge as an act of radical self-acceptance, with Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, and — of course — Grace Jones modeling the blueprint for bald bodaciousness.

Poem of the week: Hairless by Jo Shapcott

Can the bald lie? The nature of the skin says not: it’s newborn-pale, erection-tender stuff, every thought visible – pure knowledge, mind in action – shining through the skull. I saw a woman, hairless absolute, cleaning. She mopped the green floor, dusted bookshelves, all cloth and concentration, Queen of the moon. You can tell, with the bald, that the air speaks to them differently, touches their heads with exquisite expression. As she danced her laundry dance with the motes, everything she ever knew skittered under her scalp. It was clear just from the texture of her head, she was about to raise her arms to the sky; I covered my ears as she prepared to sing, to roar.

Monday, January 4, 2021

A stunning woman has been forced to tell strangers she ‘doesn’t have cancer’ after shaving her head.

The title is clickbait, but the story itself, about a woman living with alopecia, is actually quite positive. I like this quote especially:

Since her move to London from Newcastle, Zoe has felt less self conscious with people being a lot more accepting and diverse – rather than people presuming it’s an illness, people have come up complimenting her thinking it’s a fashion choice.

With alopecia being so unpredictable Zoe’s hair could grow back at any point, or not at all.

She said, “Even if it was to grow back tomorrow, I’d still keep it shaven because I’ve grown to love it and find it so liberating.

“I want to be a help to others with alopecia, as I wish I had someone to look up to when I was a teenager struggling with it – I’ve even had a friend of a friend “come out” and tell the world about her battle with alopecia because of me.”

Good on Zoe.

A bit of site maintenance

After close to 13 years (13!), this blog has managed to stay alive. Unfortunately, a lot of links don't. I have been deleting posts when replacement links are not available. If I think a post is salvageable, I am bookmarking links and keeping those posts alive. So if a blog with almost 1100 posts now has barely 900, you know why. There is a lot still to be done. Times have changed, but this blog's ethos has not changed. The ethos is simple: a shaved or buzzed head is just another haircut, regardless of gender. It may not quite be mainstream, but it's no longer quite radical either. It's perfectly fine to be out if you are a girl or a woman who is bald because of conditions like alopecia, lupus, or trichotillomania. Shaving your head in support of someone else or a cause is much more accepted now. The ethos is simple: women and girls, regardless of ethnicity, culture, or age will find find a shaved head to be an empowering experience. It does not matter whether it's just something to try either to satisfy curiosity or to go bald long term. Videos and articles have all been consistent with that ethos. More recently, this blog has featured videos and articles about maintenance of a shaved head or a buzzcut, as well as makeup and accessory tips. A lot of the latter were not available until the last few years. Something across cultures has changed. Finally, a thanks to those who keep links up. Whether they know it or not, they are inspiring, maybe numerous years later, other girls and women who have the same questions, worries, and concerns as the original video posters did. Seeing someone try something, find the experience meaningful, and worth sharing really does help others. This blog only features videos and articles of those who willingly (regardless the reason) shave their heads or decide to show the world that they are bald. There are dark corners of the internet that are best avoided, and this blog stays clear of anything that is not empowering. Anything on this blog features girls and women who took clippers and razors into their own hands, either literally or figuratively, to learn something about themselves that they could share with others who maybe felt the same way. This blog acknowledges that thes are people who are perfectly fine with validating themselves, but who are cool with others validating them as well. The latter seems more likely these days. If this blog inspires some to try something that they wanted to try, that's great. In the meantime, I'll make sure that the content here is truly positive and meaningful. That is good enough. If this blog remains an inspiration to some girls and women who've been thinking about going bald, or to finally be more accepting of those who do, it's done its job. Nothing more. Nothing less.
